Writer in Residence

Writer in Residence A keenly anticipated event, the Writer in Residence event is held to coincide with Melbourne’s Writers Festival. Over the years we have been fortunate to host many outstanding and well known authors such as Cate Kennedy, Jen McVeity and Arnold Zable. On a rare visit home, Isobell Carmody has conducted workshops with our Year 9 students. The work of these writers covers a variety of genres and styles including short stories, novels and poetry.

Writers spend the week at PCW engaging in practical workshops with students in Years 7 to 10. For students this is a special experience and gives them the opportunity to explore new avenues of literature, allowing them to expand their creative horizons in their own writing. Through his stimulating and inspiring experience, students are encouraged to enjoy writing, to gain confidence to take risks and have fun experimenting.

Students also have the opportunity to take their learning to workshops held externally where they have met writers such as Matthew Reilly and Adeline Yen Mah. For many students is it a thrill to meet their literary heroes and have copies of novels autographed.

Writers Week is a unique opportunity for students to work at close range with some very gifted authors who have the energy and wisdom to nurture a lifelong love of language and literature.
